The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about numerous changes in our lives, and one of the noticeable trends in the real estate industry is families moving closer to their loved ones.
As people strive to prioritize family togetherness and support during challenging times, the demand for larger homes and the concept of multigenerational living has emerged. In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of moving closer to family and provide valuable real estate advice on finding the perfect home for those considering upsizing or downsizing.
1. Understanding the Changing Real Estate Landscape:
COVID-19 has created both positive and negative impacts on the real estate market. However, one of the most prominent trends is people relocating to be closer to their families, particularly those living on the East and West coasts. The desire for physical proximity and emotional support has led many individuals to seek out homes in the Midwest, where their loved ones reside.
2. The Rise of Multifamily Functional Homes:
Finding a home that accommodates multiple generations is crucial when moving closer to family. The concept of a multifamily functional home has gained popularity, with grandparents occupying the main floor and parents with children residing on the upper floors. This arrangement not only fosters close-knit family relationships but it also provides shared cooking spaces, extra support, and a sense of togetherness.
3. Enlist the Help of a Qualified Real Estate Agent:

Discuss these specifics with your real estate agent to ensure they find suitable properties that match your criteria.
5. Location Matters:
Moving closer to family involves identifying the ideal location within the area where your loved ones reside. There are a lot of things that changed in the real estate industry during COVID. Some were good. Some were not so great. One of the trends that I noticed with COVID was that people started moving closer to family. Those that were living on the East and West Coast and had family in the Midwest decided that they wanted to be closer and not just have communication via Zoom. So some of the trends were moving geographically closer and buying larger houses where you can have a multifamily functional home. So Grandma and Grandpa live on the main floor, Mom and Dad with kids living upstairs.
All of that created a better space for the whole family to be together, cook in the same kitchen, and basically be closer. If you’re thinking of upsizing or downsizing, I can help create a plan that’ll fit your family’s needs. I’m Kathy Boris with Coldwell Realty, and I’d love to help you find your new home.
